Trixie – Augusta, MT
ESRA Special Needs Springer

ESRA #2009-326UT
Age: 3 years
Gender: Female
Color: Black and white
Trixie is a young energetic girl who enjoys running off lead with her foster mom and her constant companion Rocco. She has plenty of room to use her energy as her foster home is in the country. All that activity however, has unearthed a problem that puts Trixie in the special class of “ESRA Special Needs Dogs.”
We have discovered that Trixie needs surgery in not just one knee, but two. She urgently needs surgery and the rehabilitation that goes along with it on the first knee. The second surgical procedure will be scheduled after two months recovery time from the first.
Trixie is young and deserves all that we can provide her to ensure she has a happy life. The procedures will be expensive but we know she is worth the expense — please consider adding your name to Trixie's list of sponsors.
UPDATE 9/17/09: The definitive diagnoses on Trixie's knee problems are now in — along with estimates for their repairs. On the worst knee she needs an ACL repair. On the other knee she needs surgery to repair a “luxating patella.” Together both of these surgeries could cost several thousands of dollars but the Cottonwood Veterinary Hospital in Bozeman, Montana, has graciously agreed to perform both surgeries at half their normal costs. The procedures will still be expensive but not as expensive as they could have been.
Your donation to this special needs girl is desperately needed. Please donate to Trixie's surgical fund today. One dollar, five dollars, ten dollars or more could really make the difference. Thank you!
UPDATE 11/01/09:
Trixie is having her first surgery this week. They will start with the most
complicated of the two surgeries — the ACL repair. She will need at least two months of recuperation before the second
surgery so we have scheduled that one — the laxating patella repair — for January. For six months after her
second surgical procedure, her foster family will be required to "corral her energy" and restrict her activity to ensure that
everything heals well and strength returns. A happy active life awaits on the other side of that!
UPDATE 12/18/09: Trixie has had her first checkup since her surgery. Doctors are positive about the way her leg is healing. It is taking longer to heal than originally expected so foster mom, Lucy, still has Trixie on "leash restriction." Her surgeon wants to wait until sometime in February for the second knee surgery.
With the weather in Montana what it is, Lucy and Trixie are extra careful not to slip on the ice. Trixie would like nothing better than to bunny hop through the massive amount of snow that is in her yard. Alas, Trixie will have to wait until next winter.
Lucy, Trixie and the whole family would like to give a great big hug and doggie kisses to everyone who donated to her surgeries. It is only because of donations that both surgeries can happen.
The Montana Coordinator, Heather Fall, would like to give a special shout out to 11 foster children in Georgia who pooled their pennies to donate to Trixie. With all my heart, I wish to thank The Whitley Family of Mount Berry, Georgia to include Sally (age 10), Mary Elizabeth (age 7), Johnny (age 4), Tabitha (age 10), Ann Claire (age 6 months), Mary (age 18), Ashley (age 18), Tabitha (age 18), Richard (age 16), Brittany (age 15), and Kyra (age 10). These kids chose to make something positive come out of the loss of their beloved Springer, Gracie, and raised $58.20 to go towards Trixie's surgery.
On behalf of Trixie, Lucy (Foster/Adoptive Mom) and the entire Pacific Northwest Team, each and every person who donated to Trixie's surgeries are angels on Earth. Happy Holidays to each and everyone one of you.UPDATE 3/9/10: Trixie had some complications from her first surgery so she needed more time, physical therapy and steroid shots before she could undergo the second. She'll be ready soon.
