See All Special Needs Springers
Meet Sadie. Sadie is a five month old, beautiful, liver and white, happy, bouncy, Springer puppy, or so you would think. Sadie was rescued from a puppy mill in Missouri at the age of three months. By all accounts she seemed like a normal Springer puppy. She came into ESRA's care and we soon discovered that Sadie was NOT a normal, healthy, Springer puppy. Sadie was diagnosed with a grade 6/6 continuous heart murmur, and her radiographs showed enlargement of her heart and pulmonary vessels. Sadie's echocardiogram revealed a left to right shunting, Patent Ductus Arteriosis (PDA), which is a genetic defect which occurs in very poor breeding, and is hereditary. If surgery is not performed on Sadie, she will probably not live to turn one year old, much less find her way to a Forever Home. Sadie received her diagnosis from the University of Missouri, Columbia, Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. The staff fell in love with Sadie and her sweet nature, despite her ill health. Sadie has been scheduled for surgery on January 25, 2007, and has been monitored for heart failure in the meantime. Early surgery will halt the progression of her heart dysfunction. The surgery suggested for Sadie has been successfully performed in other dogs, and the Teaching Hospital feels that she has a wonderful chance of a successful surgery. She should recover to be a healthy, happy, Springer, available for adoption in a few months after her surgery.
Sadly, if this sweet girl had been kept in the puppy mill to breed, she would probably be dead in a few months. She certainly would never have survived giving birth to a litter of pups, thus resulting in the loss of more lives. Because ESRA has stepped up to help this sweet girl, she will be able to live a happy normal life after her surgery and give one special family more love and companionship than could ever be expected. Sadie's surgery will be expensive, and she will only be able to receive a second chance at life because of ESRA, and it's constant efforts to help save wonderful Springers
Update 25 JAN 07: This is the only evidence that Sadie had major heart surgery today. Some of those fancy human surgical techniques are being used in the veterinary world, too! No open-heart surgery for this girl! A small incision for the endoscope used in the hands of her skilled heart surgeon was all that was needed. She'll heal much quicker this way, too. All went well today in the operating room! Update 28 JAN 07: Sadie is doing wonderful. She went home on Friday to her foster home and is resting comfortably!! Now, what she needs is the time to recuperate from this ordeal. Soon, she will want to begin the process of finding her Forever Home. Can you make a small contribution toward her costs? ESRA was her last resort prior to death, and the only one who could step forward to save this sweet little bundle's life. We could sure use your help to do what we do! Thanks!
"She is flourishing in her environment and she will be best placed with a family with other dogs and children. She is quite sad without the activity." This young girl is going to make someone a truly wonderful companion! Contact: Denise Garwood Dgarwood37@aol.com
Update 06 APR 07: Sadie has successfully been adopted to a loving family that will cherish her and love her for all time! Here's a shot of the happy family!
