ESRA Special "PACKage" Springers

ESRA received a desperate plea from the shelter staff when 13 Springers/Springer blends were surrendered by a relative of a family member who had died. This rural Alabama shelter was already at capacity and the shelter desperately wanted to save these terrified dogs. (Three have now been transferred to another rescue, leaving 10 in the care of ESRA).

ESRA was subsequently told that these dogs had been living in a house filled with dog feces and urine as victims of an elderly hoarder. Rescues of this type are very stressful on the dogs involved, even when their living conditions are greatly improved. It takes time and patience to earn their trust.

Over the coming weeks, we will be tasked with transporting them to their ESRA foster homes and assessing their individual medical needs, then helping them heal mentally and physically. We know that several of them have issues with their eyes; one has multiple mammary tumors and one has bilateral luxating patellas. Several of them are seniors.

This is a big project and requires a tremendous commitment of financial resources from our organization. ESRA's wonderful foster homes are stepping up to the plate for these dogs and we need your help too.

We hope that as 2016 comes to a close, the memories of the past will fade for these 12 lucky dogs and they can see the bright future ahead as much-loved family members. Check back often. We will share progress reports along the way.

UPDATE 11/20/16:

We are so grateful that foster families from across the Southeast and Midwest have stepped up to help the Florence Pack! Two dogs are in foster care in Ohio; two dogs are in a Georgia foster home; two are in Florida foster homes; three are in Alabama foster homes and one is in Mississippi.

Tanner All these dogs are settling in and receiving much-needed veterinary care. About half of the Florence dogs developed kennel cough and urinary tract infections. Several have eye issues and are seeing the veterinary ophthalmologist. Tinker had a particularly tough bout with kennel cough and also will need surgery to remove bi-lateral mammary tumors.

Tanner, pictured updating his status, is being treated for skin and ear infections and is scheduled to be neutered. He is doing very well and has learned to use the doggy door. His foster mom describes him as "part cat."

Timothy, pictured enjoying the backyard, had many teeth removed, has been neutered and is being treated for a skin infection. He has learned to use the doggy door, is sleeping in the bed with his foster family and loves cheese. Timothy

Although all 10 members of the Florence Pack were rescued in Alabama, several were later moved to available foster homes in Ohio, Georgia, Florida and Mississippi for veterinary treatment and rehabilitation. Four of these pups are now listed on the ESRA website and actively seeking Forever Homes, and a couple more should be listed shortly. Others have more severe medical and behavioral issues and will need a little more time in foster care before they are ready to be offered for adoption.
