If you are looking for a well behaved dog, Baxter is your man. He is a chipper and well-mannered boy that was surrendered to us on June 25. Baxter lived in a home for a year before he outgrew the small house with a growing family. From there he went to live with a working couple for nine years and always stayed in his yard. Then a new neighbor dog moved in and Baxter kept going over to visit. His owner sadly gave him up when he got tired of trying to keep him home. Baxter is a friendly guy and just wanted someone to play with. He is great with everyone - people or pets. Baxter was born in November 2000 and has an old eye injury that looks nasty, but doesn't bother him a bit. Kojack is a neutered black-and-white male Springer mix that was found in Earlville, Iowa. He is fine about getting pulled and tugged on, and he is okay with hugs and nail trims. He is tolerant of having his teeth looked at, but he does guard his food bowl. Our staff can give you pointers on how to help him be more comfortable around his food. He wasn't comfortable in our test crate.
We recommend a home for Kojack with children no younger than ten. A basic obedience course would help Kojack know what is expected of him, and it would also help strengthen the bond between him and his new owner.

My Story: I came into People 4 Pets in Spencer, Iowa with my littermates Louie and Romeo, who are also available for adoption. My mom is a Springer and my dad is a Beagle.
Hobbies: I enjoy chewing on whatever is handy - sticks in the yard, stuffed toys, chew toys, get the idea?
Commands/Tricks: Since I'm still a baby, I am learning many new things. I am learning to walk on a leash, sit and the one I do not really want to learn "leave it." My foster mom uses that one more than once a day! I do come when she calls "puppy, puppy." I will need a puppy class for sure to be the best puppy I can be.
Crate/Potty Trained: I am crate trained and keep my kennel clean and dry during the night and naptimes. I think that is pretty good for a little guy. As for the potty training I am starting to get the idea. The problem is I get so distracted by those sticks outside that sometimes I forget to go. My foster mom keeps reminding me but the sticks are calling me too.
Activity Level: I am high-energy, but like any puppy, I go, go, go now for two hours and then sleep for two hours. Then it starts all over again until I crash at night. I do sleep through the night for 8 hours. My foster mom really likes that. Your welcome mom!
Fun things I do: I love to sniff, sniff, sniff. I just want to smell everything and anything, over and over again. Hey, blame it on my DNA! I love chasing and playing tug with my brother Romeo.
Socialization/who I currently live with: one adult and one teenage boy. There is resident Springer and various dogs that come for a day or two. So I am learning how to play with other dogs. I still will need to work on this as I like to be the leader of the pack. The older dogs just laugh at me when I try to boss them around.
Foster Notes: Buster has the leader of the pack personality. He would do best in a home with another dog. He will need puppy classes and continued socialization. He is the brightest of the three, very focused on learning, and wanting to please. Because of that Beagle/Springer nose Buster will need a fenced in yard.
Buster is attending Pet Haven's medium/large dog adoption events. Fees for his adoption include his neutering, heartworm check, current vaccinations, microchip and registration.

Scooby is a great dog that was surrendered because the neighbors complained about his howling. However, Scooby was kept in the yard during the day and in the garage at night so he was just lonely. He has become one of the volunteer favorites. He is a fantastic dog. He walks great on a leash, learns commands very quickly (see video on Petfinder) and loves his belly rubs. He would probably do best with another canine companion to keep separation anxiety down and stop the howling. Please come meet and spend some time with this great dog!

My Story: I came into People 4 Pets in Spencer, Iowa with my littermates Louie and Buster, who are also available for adoption. My mom is a Springer and my dad is a Beagle.
Hobbies: Since I am a puppy, I love to chew on whatever is handy - sticks the in the yard, stuffed toys, chew toys, you name it.
Commands/Tricks: I'm still a baby, so I am learning many new things. I am learning to walk on a leash, sit and the one I do not really want to learn "leave it." My foster mom uses that one more than once a day!!! I do come when she calls "puppy, puppy." I will need a puppy class for sure to be the best puppy I can be.
Crate / Potty Trained: I am crate trained and keep my kennel clean and dry during the night and naptimes. I think that is pretty good for a little guy. As for the potty training I am starting to get the idea. The problem is i get so distracted by those sticks outside that sometimes I forget to go when I should. My foster mom keeps reminding me but the sticks are calling me too.
Activity Level: I love to stay active. I go, go, go now for two hours and then sleep for two hours. Then it starts all over again until I crash at night, which I do for the whole night.
Fun things I do: With my Springer and Beagle nose, I adore sniffing. I just want to smell everything and anything and then sniff it again. My brother Buster is super fun to play with and we like to chase, play tug and chew on sticks.
Socialization/who I currently live with: One adult and one teenage boy. There is one resident Springer and various dogs that come for a day or two. So I am learning how to play with other dogs. I am quite easy going and get along with everyone, including cats.
Foster Notes: Romeo is a very sweet boy living up to his name. He will need puppy classes and continued socialization. Because of that Beagle/Springer nose Buster will need a fenced in yard. As a young puppy Romeo needs to be let out at least every four hours.
Romeo is attending Pet Haven's medium/large dog adoption events. The fee for his adoption includes spay/neuter, heartworm check, current vaccinations, microchip and registration.

Hobbies: I love squeaky toys and chew toys. If my foster brother is playing with a toy, I like to play with that one too. I enjoy many naps during the day and love to lie at foster mom's feet to keep them warm I promise that I don't snore too loud. But I have to say that my most favorite hobby of all is to have my ears scratched.
Commands/Tricks: Since I'm still a baby, I am learning many new things. I know sit and I'm learning leave it. I was intimidated by the stairs when I first saw them, but do pretty good on them now. I sometimes get scared to go down them, but then I bark to let my foster mom know she needs to walk with me.
Crate / Potty Trained: I am working hard on my potty training and most of the time I go outside where I'm supposed to. My foster mom is good about taking me out frequently and I even tell her when I have to go by barking and sniffing. There are a lot of new smells in my foster home so sometimes I like to claim my territory by marking. My foster mom tells me I should stop wanting to do this so much once I have my surgery next week. She says all boy puppies like to do this when they are young. My least favorite thing is to be left alone in my crate but foster mom gives me lots of treats and food when I have to go in - that makes it a little easier. I sleep in there all night too.
Activity Level: Medium. I am a puppy and love to get going playing with my foster brother and mom but then I need a nap to recover from all the excitement.
Fun things I do: I love to sniff everything. Where the action is, so am I. I follow my foster mom and brother wherever they go. I'm not going to miss out on the fun! I love it when we hang on the back deck and catch some rays but I really love to play in the sand box too. I like to find surprises around the yard (like sticks and woodchips) and chew on them. My foster mom doesn't like that too much, hence we're working on the leave it command.
Socialization/who I currently live with: Two adults and one male westie who likes to boss me around sometimes (when we're not tumbling around the living room or back yard playing)
Foster Notes: Louie is doing great settling in to family life. He's still very much a puppy so needs someone to teach him how to be a good-mannered dog and break all of those bad puppy habits. He loves to snuggle and talk to you, he's very good at telling you what he needs. He's a sweet pup!

Lilly is one of the sweetest dogs we've had in a while! She is a Springer Spaniel who was found as a stray, and her owners never came to claim her. She was very matted when she was found. She has a grooming appointment scheduled to get rid of some of the mats, so she can start fresh.
Lily is incredibly sweet, and she loves people. She enjoys going for walks and seems to be pretty good on leash. She loves to just sit at your feet and be petted, soaking in the love. During her photo shoot, she flopped right over on her back to get her tummy rubbed! Lilly will only be adopted as an indoor dog, as we do not think she would be happy as an outdoor-only dog.
