Jan Mitchell

In Memoriam — February 26, 2016

Jan Mitchell was a dedicated ESRA volunteer and dog lover who lived in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. In 1971 she adopted her first Springer, Bridget, which began her 45-year love of the breed.

Jan first became acquainted with ESRA approximately eight years ago at the Scottish Festival in Colorado where ESRA had a booth with some of their foster dogs in attendance. Jan and her husband Gary had adopted a Springer named Winchester from a local rescue group earlier, and the opportunity to join ESRA and help to rescue more Springers intrigued Jan. Soon after the Festival, she signed up to volunteer, and she jumped in with major enthusiasm. Besides fostering, transporting dogs and performing home visits, Jan spearheaded special events at local festivals as well as participating in many fundraising efforts.

One of Jan's major involvements with ESRA was as Chair for seven years of the highly successful annual Rocky Mountain ESRA picnic. Each year, the picnic has been attended by approximately 100 people and 75 of their furry friends. Donations and the proceeds from silent auctions at the annual picnic have totaled several thousand dollars every year. Sharing fond memories of working with Jan will be a focus at this year's event. Colorado and the Rocky Mountain ESRA region will certainly miss Jan and her dedication to Springers.
