Florence Elizabeth Peterson Dick
In Memoriam — December 5, 2015
Florence Dick died after a brief illness on Saturday, December 5, 2015. Better known in her ESRA family as "Flo" she has often been referred to as one of the most "unsung" of ESRA's long-time loyal volunteers. She and her husband John hold the honor of being the very first entry in ESRA's approved foster home database, but Flo's major contribution to ESRA was her role as Membership Chairman which she held faithfully almost since the beginnings of the organization until her death. Her loss is being mourned by many who worked closely with her through the years and by the many members who may not have ever met Flo in person but who were warmly welcomed by her as their first official contact from the organization.
Born in LaPorte, Indiana, October 19, 1945, she was the only child of Alfred Roy Peterson and Charlotte McReynolds Peterson who preceded her in death. A graduate of Greencastle High School in Greencastle, Indiana, she earned her Bachelor's degree at Indiana University with honors and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, then earned her Master's degree in History at Yale University. She wed John Russell Dick in 1972 and moved to El Paso, Texas, where they enjoyed 43 years of marriage.
For many years she was employed by the Office of Sponsored Projects at UTEP, taking a major role in writing and editing grant proposals. An avid reader of murder mysteries, she also enjoyed country music, NASCAR racing, and good wine. In addition to her volunteer roles in ESRA, she was a Life Member of Rio Grande Obedience Dog Club, serving as Treasurer of that organization, and was active in the Gordon Setter Club of America at the time of her death.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Flo's husband John graciously suggests memorial contributions be made to the organizations so dear to Flo's heart, ESRA being one of them. We appreciate the opportunity to honor Flo's memory in this way. She will be greatly missed.
