Father Michael C. Mangoian

October 27, 1945 – April 19, 2017

Father Michael C. Mangoian, beloved friend to many and treasured San Diego ESRA volunteer member, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on April 19, 2017. Father Michael C. Mangoian

Mike was born in California and lived most of his life in California after serving in the military. At the time of his death, he was a resident of the city of San Diego.

Mike's life was one of service to his fellow man and other living creatures, especially companion animals! Mike loved nothing more than being of service to those in need. Mike helped many, many people during his lifetime, and he helped many a homeless pet. He loved the companionship of the various dogs he owned during his lifetime, especially his English Springer Spaniels. He had an affinity for those "hard to adopt" Springers, such as seniors with special needs, and he lovingly welcomed them into his home. In fact, Mike adopted three hard-to-adopt Springers from ESRA during a twelve-year period. He is survived by his senior English Springer Spaniel, Mickey. Memorial tributes in Father Mike's name to ESRA's Jan Flagg Fund will help ESRA continue to provide services to those special-needs Springers that Mike was so fond of.

Immediately after graduation from high school, Mike left for Rome, Italy to study philosophy for several years at the Pontifical Gregorian University. Mike chose to join the U.S. Navy in 1967 and did two tours of duty in South Vietnam. He proudly served. Mike retired from the Navy as a chief hospital corpsman in 1987. After retiring from the Navy, he worked as a nurse for thirteen years. Mike was ordained a Catholic priest on April 18, 2009, and he made his Solemn Profession of Vows as a solitary Benedictine priest on July 23, 2012.

Mike devoted hundreds and hundreds of volunteer hours to ESRA. He was an integral part of the ESRA San Diego team. He performed home checks, dog evaluations (both shelter and owner relinquishments), transports, and fostering. Mike was ESRA's adoption partner representative with the County of San Diego Department of Animal Services and the San Diego Humane Society. He was a terrific public-relations representative for ESRA. Mike was a very devoted ESRA volunteer with a fantastic sense of humor, which is always an asset when doing rescue work!

Mike equally devoted thousands of volunteer hours to assisting our veterans in need. Mike had a special niche ministry working one on one (peer-to-peer mentoring) with his brother and sister combat vets through American Combat Veterans of War at the Veterans' Administration Medical Center in La Jolla, California. He devoted his energies specifically to working with our PTSD vets as well as with those in recovery for substance abuse. He was also a mentor for participants in the Veterans Treatment Court system in San Diego. He served on call 24/7 with Sharp Hospice to administer the Sacraments of the Sick.

Mike's ashes will be interred at Miramar National Cemetery. The ceremony will take place on Monday, May 15, 2017, at 12:30 pm. Additionally, there will be a Celebration of Life for Father Mike during the summer months of 2017. The exact date is to be announced. Mike's twinkling eyes, smile, and laugh will not be forgotten. His legacy will live on through the many lives he touched with his caring spirit.
